7/16 We headed north from Petersburg in Stephens Passage and came across a bay full of Humpback whales. (20 to 25+) We stopped the boat for an hour and a half and had about 7 whales swim right near the boat. We watched them dive repeatedly and breech at least a dozen times, two times right next to the boat. A breech is when they fly out of the water and then turn to crash to the water on their backs. It was quite thrilling! It was a very still day so you could heaar them breathe and make loud sounds just like a bull.
